Aerial images show extent of damage caused by wildfires in Gironde


La Teste-de-Buch (France) (AFP) – Helicopter images show the forest and campsites of the Gironde coastline, in southwestern France, which was ravaged by flames as well as the creation of a deforestation zone by firefighters to prevent the fire from spreading to the Landes. The wildfires burned nearly 21,000 hectares of forest in the region.

Moscow accuses Kyiv of striking east Ukraine jail, dozens of POWs dead


Moscow (AFP) – The Russian army accuses Kyiv forces of striking a jail holding Ukrainian prisoners of war in eastern Ukraine, saying dozens of people died and scores were wounded. Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba has accused Russian forces of having carried out the attack.

Young Tunisian artists bring new life to old trainers


La Goulette (Tunisia) (AFP) – Artists restore trainers at the Kenenti workshop in the Tunis neighbourhood of La Goulette. Passionate about design, 27-year-old Cherif Zaroui opened the first trainer restoration business in North Africa two years ago to offer customisation, repair and cleaning of shoes and handbags. Zaroui and his artists use fabrics, laces and leather recovered from factories to bring a second life to old items. “There were 3 or 4 million shoes thrown away every year [in Tunisia]. So we thought of giving added value to these shoes”, says Zaroui.

Lottery hopefuls flock to ‘lucky’ California store as $1bn jackpot looms


Chino Hills (United States) (AFP) – The odds of claiming this week’s bonanza US lottery prize are less than one-in-300-million — but one “lucky” convenience store outside Los Angeles is already counting its winnings, as customers are flocking in, hoping to get some luck. “This is the lucky store so I’m hoping he becomes lucky for me as well”, says a customer.
