Rescue operation underway for boy trapped in Indian well


Janjgiri (India) (AFP) – Indian emergency workers carry out a rescue operation to save a 10-year-old boy, who has been trapped down a narrow well for four days in the central state of Chhattisgarh. Rescuers have managed to insert an oxygen pipe into the well where the boy is trapped, as well as a camera.

Zelensky: Battle for Donbas ‘one of most brutal battles in Europe’


Kyiv (Ukraine) (AFP) – In his nightly address, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says that the battle for Donbas “will surely go down in military history as one of the most brutal battles in Europe and for Europe”. He adds that Ukraine has “no other choice but to move forward”.

Mariupol (Ukraine) (AFP) – Aerial images show widespread devastation at the Azovstal iron and steel works in Mariupol – the site of a last stand by Ukrainian soldiers against Russian forces in the city. Ukrainian fighters only surrendered at the end of May, after three months of fierce fighting.

Volgograd (Russia) (AFP) – In his modest apartment in the southern Russian city of Volgograd, former university lecturer Roman Melnichenko is in trouble for speaking out against Russia’s offensive in Ukraine. The 49-year-old is fighting the courts to be able to teach again, despite the risk of ending up in prison.
