Taiwanese islands on frontline unfazed by Beijing threat


Penghu Islands (Taiwan) (AFP) – In the Penghu islands, a strategically important archipelago about 50 kilometres off the coast of Taiwan, the lull of waves and seabirds is punctuated daily by the roar of fighter jets speeding through the air. The islands’ location out in the Taiwan Strait means they are likely to be on the frontline of any potential invasion by China.

Germans turn to food banks as inflation hits

Zelensky says no leader can ‘individually force’ Putin to stop war


Kyiv (Ukraine) (AFP) – After meeting with the leaders of France, Germany, Italy and Romania in Kyiv, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says “we are expecting new deliveries” of weapons to aid his country’s defence against Russia. In response to a question from a French journalist on President Macron’s phone calls with Vladimir Putin, Zelensky says “I’m not sure there are leaders in the world today who could individually force Russia to stop the war”.

Spain battles wildfires in Catalonia as heatwave persists


Baldomar (Spain) (AFP) – Emergency services battle several wildfires in Catalonia as Spain remains in the grip of an exceptional heatwave that has seen temperatures reach 43 degrees Celsius (109 degrees Farenheit). The most alarming blaze, near Baldomar in Catalonia, has already destroyed more than 500 hectares of forest.

‘Super Frenchie’ performs Ski-BASE jump in Mont Blanc Massif


Chamonix (France) (AFP) – Matthias Giraud, also known as “Super Frenchie” because of his thrill-seeking stunts, performs a Ski-BASE jump from the Aiguille du Goûter, a 4000 metre-high mountain in the Mont Blanc Massif in the French Alps. In his latest exploit, 10 years in the planning, Super Frenchie is seen enjoying an impressive descent and deploying his parachute while free-falling.

Suspect confesses to burying bodies of two men missing in Amazon
