‘Tragic’: Hundreds protest in St Louis as Missouri bans abortions


St. Louis (AFP) – Protesters gather in front of the last clinic that was performing abortions in the state of Missouri, United States after it had to shut down its activities. “For me, it’s tragic… Women died getting abortions back then,” says 68 Pamela Lukehart, with tears in her eyes remembering when they were not legal in all of the United States. She joins the protest with her granddaughter, 23 years old Audrey. A few hundred protesters took to the streets of St. Louis, chanting “My body, my choice”. Missouri became the first state to ban abortions after the Supreme Court of the United States overturned Roe v. Wade, the 50 years old decision that was guarantying women the right to an abortion in the country.

Pro-LGBT demonstration in Oslo after fatal shooting at gay bar


Oslo (AFP) – Several hundred people are demonstrating in the streets of Oslo in support of LGBT rights, following the cancellation of the Gay Pride by the authorities due to shootings in the early hours of Saturday in the Norwegian capital that left two people dead and several more wounded. IMAGES

Ukraine joining EU poses ‘no risks’ says Russia’s Lavrov


Baku (AFP) – Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov says that Ukraine and Moldova joining the 27-nation bloc would present “no risks” for Russia. However, Lavrov accuses the EU and NATO of wanting to wage war on Russia, comparing them to the Axis powers in World War II.

For Iraq’s amputee football team, healing is the goal


Baghdad (AFP) – An all-amputee football team, made up entirely of players who lost limbs in Iraq’s many years of war, knock the ball about in Baghdad. The team cares about more than getting the ball in the back of the net – the goal is to get the players’ confidence back.

UN says Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh killed by Israeli fire


Geneva (AFP) – The United Nations says that its findings show that the shot that killed Al Jazeera TV journalist Shireen Abu Akleh on May 11 was fired by Israeli forces. The Palestinian-American journalist, who was wearing a vest marked “Press” and a helmet, was killed while covering an Israeli army operation in Jenin camp in the northern West Bank.

Beachgoers brave rockets in east Ukraine


Sloviansk (Ukraine) (AFP) – With its white sand and clear water, the beach at Lake Weiss in Ukraine’s Sloviansk looks deserted. But some locals brave the beach despite the nearby sounds of rockets and missiles, as residents seek some normality amid the fierce fighting in the embattled region.
