Dakar (AFP) – “Les Restes suprêmes” by Rwandan director Dorcy Rugamba is making waves at this year’s Dakar Biennale. The director, through a mask played by French actress Nathalie Vairac, traces the history of the vestiges of the colonial period and raises the debate on the restitution of African heritage.

Argentina garbage recyclers protest outside Coca-Cola HQ


Buenos Aires (AFP) – Amidst a mountain of empty bottles, garbage recyclers protest in front of the Coca-Cola headquarters in Buenos Aires as part of their demand for a “packaging law” that introduces the principle of extended producer responsibility. “We are the only ones who put our hands in the garbage to recover what this company puts into the environment”, says one recycler during the demonstration.

Syria’s major cherry production marks setback in war-torn Idlib


Jūzīf (Syria) (AFP) – In a cherry field in the town of Juzif in the Jebel al-Zawiyah mountains of Syria’s rebel-held Idlib province, farmers pick cherries as their harvest marks a major setback due to this year’s cold winter and the ongoing 11-year civil war.

Yemen’s Taiz residents ‘no longer have faith in the truce’


Taez (Yemen) (AFP) – “The people of Taiz are no longer optimistic about the truce; they no longer have faith in it,” says Taiz resident Mohammed al-Hurribi. Yemen’s warring parties have agreed to renew a two-month truce, according to the United Nations.
