South Korea’s Gen-Z divided over political crisis


Seoul (AFP) – A divide has emerged among South Korea’s youth since President Yoon Suk Yeol declared a bungled martial law decree in December and hunkered down at his residence resisting arrest. On one side, young conservative men — including evangelical Christians and those who openly support Trump — are railing against his impeachment. On the other, young women and supporters of liberal causes like the LGBTQ+ community, climate justice and labour rights are calling for his immediate detention.

Hindu holy men take dip in Ganges at India’s Kumbh Mela festival


Prayagraj (India) (AFP) – Aerial images of Hindu holy men and devotees taking a ceremonial dip in Sangam, the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna and mythical Saraswati rivers, for Shahi Snan or “royal bath” as part of the Kumbh Mela festival. Organisers are expecting some 400 million people to attend the Kumbh Mela festival in northern India — a six-week-long celebration of prayer and bathing that began before dawn on Monday. IMAGES

UK climate activists target Darwin’s grave with chalk


London (AFP) – Climate activists target Charles Darwin’s grave with chalk paint, in the latest controversial disruptive action by protesters over the UK government’s environmental policies. Two Just Stop Oil (JSO) supporters are seen spray-painting with chalk “1.5 is dead” on the 19th-century biologist’s grave in Westminster Abbey in central London, a reference to the internationally agreed target upper limit for global warming, which the world breached in 2024.

Vintage car enthusiasts take to the streets of Paris


Paris (AFP) – Almost 1,000 collectors criss-cross the French capital at the wheel of vintage cars, motorbikes, bicycles and even tractors, for the 25th “Traversee de Paris”, organised annually by the “Vincennes en Anciennes” motoring club.

Sälen (Sweden) (AFP) – Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson speaks at the Folk och Forsvar defence forum in the central town of Salen on threats to his country from Russia and Iran. “We and our neighbouring countries are subjected to hybrid attacks that are not carried out with missiles and soldiers but with computers, money, disinformation and threats of sabotage,” he says.

Palestinian doctor continues to serve at Gaza hospital despite losing leg


Deir el-Balah (Palestinian Territories) (AFP) – Palestinian paediatrician Khaled al-Saidani moves through his Gaza hospital with determination, using a prosthetic leg and an aluminium walker as he cares for children also injured in the war. He knows all too well the devastating impact of wounds sustained during war, having lost his right leg after an Israeli air strike on his house last year.
