The Springbok Women won 44-5 over Spain in their first of two Women’s Winter Series Test matches at Ellis Park on Saturday. The Bok Women held a 20-0 lead at the break and then scored 24 more points before conceding a try at the final buzzer for the dazzling win.

Coach Stanley Raubenheimer says this is a sign that their hard work is starting to bear fruit.

“This was a very good performance by the squad today and I want to congratulate the players with their effort,” he said. Read more here.

Ndavi Nokeri crowned Miss South Africa 2022 – News24

Ndavi Nokeri, 23, from Tzaneen, Limpopo, was crowned Miss South Africa 2022 at a glittering pageant finale on Saturday night.

Nokeri advanced to the top 3 with fellow contestants Lebogang Mahlangu and Ayanda Thabethe.

The newly crowned Miss South Africa, who also won the People’s Choice award, will represent South Africa at the world’s three most prestigious pageants – Miss World, Miss Universe and Miss Supranational. Read more here.

The police cannot deal with zama zamas on its own, Cele tells Parliament – News24

Police Minister Bheki Cele conceded that the police, on its own, will not be able to deal decisively with illegal mining activities, reports News24. 

On Thursday, Cele and Mineral Resources and Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe briefed the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) on interventions to curb illegal mining.

“Illegal mining destroys the social fabric of the mining industry through bribery, corruption, and threats of violence against mineworkers and management. Illegal mining gives rise to prostitution, child labour, substance abuse and other crimes that adversely affect mining communities,” said Cele. Read more here

Seven suspects in the Krugersdorp mine dump attack charged with rape – TimesLIVE

According to TimesLIVE, last month’s gang rape of eight victims in Krugersdorp was connected to seven suspects. 

The women were filming a music video in an abandoned mine on the West Rand on July 30 when they and the film crew were attacked by dozens of men wearing Basotho blankets. The article further states that five of the eight models were raped collectively. It was suspected that the assailants were zama zamas working in the neighbourhood.

“The seven charged with rape appeared in the Krugersdorp magistrate’s court alongside their co-accused, where they faced additional charges of robbery and the contravention of the Immigration Act on Wednesday.” Read more here

‘Terrible at goodbyes’: Serena Williams begins farewell tour with Canadian Open defeat – The Guardian 

Serena Williams’s farewell tour didn’t last long. According to The Guardian, she lost to Belinda Bencic in the second round of the Canadian Open 6-2, 6-4, just one day after she said she was going to quit tennis.

Williams got a standing ovation when she walked onto the court, and the full crowd cheered for her the whole 77-minute match. 

“It’s been a pretty interesting 24 hours … I’m terrible at goodbyes. But, goodbye Toronto. I always had amazing times here both on and off the court. I’ll be coming back just as a visitor to the city but otherwise it’s been remarkable,” said Williams. Read more here

Phala Phala theft: The Dubai buyer, a buffalo and the stolen $600 000 – News24 (for subscribers)

News24 reported that in February 2020, thieves took cash worth about $600,000 from President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Phala Phala farmhouse. This was much less than the millions of dollars that were first thought to have been taken.

Hendrik von Wielligh, who runs Ramaphosa’s farm, was paid about R9 million for the sale of one buffalo, News24 reported.

“News24 believes the buyer was from Dubai, but the name of the person who paid in cash remains unknown, although it has been submitted to the Public Protector. The money was also not hidden under a mattress or couch cushion as has been widely speculated, but was stored in a cupboard.” Read more here

Tuesday night at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg, Kaizer Chiefs earned their first win of the season by beating Maritzburg United 3-0 in their DStv Premiership encounter.

According to Harpers Bazaar, Pete Davidson is going for trauma counselling after being harassed by Kanye West. 

Soon after Kardashian and Davidson’s separation over the weekend, Kanye West posted a menacing image on Instagram with the caption “Skete Davidson Dead at Age 28.”

According to People, Kardashian and Davidson’s representatives contacted Instagram about removing the image, which has already been removed. The insider said that Davidson’s team and Kim’s have consistently asked Instagram to make the platform safer. Read more here

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has ordered 200 troops to be on standby for deployment because South Africa is steadily degenerating into civil unrest as a result of crime.

“It is foreseen that the SANDF might be called to play their secondary role to go on 24-hour standby in anticipation of further unrest.”

TimesLIVE reports that military generals were reminded that all units must immediately maintain maximum security in light of the rising number of violent occurrences. Read more here

Bok captain Kolisi full of praise for the support they received in Mbombela – TimesLIVE

On Saturday, the Springboks defeated the All Blacks 26-10 in the Rugby Championship. According to TimesLIVE, the Springboks’ captain, Siya Kolisi, was full of admiration for the fans who filled Mbombela Stadium and motivated the team to victory.

“I just don’t know how SA people do it. The way they turn up with everything that’s going on in our country. People who can afford it come along and fill up the stadium for us and it means the world to us as a team.”

Kim Kardashian and Pete Davidson’s breakup after nine months of dating was confirmed by Entertainment Tonight.

Residents of Kagiso, a township in Krugersdorp, took to the streets on Thursday to protest illegal miners.

The protests turned violent when residents assaulted 19 people, they believed to be illegal miners with one man found dead, and his shack was torched, claims former acting Gauteng police commissioner Major-General Tommy Mthombeni.

Mthombeni added that the 19 people that were assaulted were also found to have been in South Africa illegally. Read more here. 

Sahpra confirms fatality linked to COVID-19 vaccination – EWN

For the first time, South Africa has recorded a death following immunisation for Covid-19 using the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

The South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (Sahpra) said due to patient confidentiality, no details regarding the case may be released.

The patient was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome, a disorder that attacks the body’s nervous system and is associated with taking various vaccines but can also be triggered by infections, including the SARS-CoV2 virus. Read more here.

Kylie Jenner Speaks on Accusation of Breaching Sanitation Protocols in Cosmetics Lab Photos – Complex

Kylie Jenner has hit back at a critic following accusations that she is putting customers at risk by not following sanitisation protocols at her make-up manufacturing facility.

Jenner, 24, recently posted pictures to her Instagram account where she is seen testing out new products in a lab facility. She copped flake from cosmetic developer Kevin James Bennett, who accused the youngest Kardashian sister of breaching protocols and said he would make sure he never worked with the manufacturing facility.

Jenner took to Bennett’s post to fire off a reply in the comments section, “I would never bypass sanitary protocols, and neither would any other celeb or beauty brand owner,” she wrote. Read more here.

Eskom leaves Khayelitsha after gangsters demand protection cash – Scrolla

Parts of the Western Cape township have been without power since Sunday after Eskom pulled its workers from the township after gangsters began threatening the power utility’s employees, demanding protection money.

Until recently, local gangs had only been targeting foreign national informal traders but have since turned their sights to something more lucrative.

Acting general manager for Eskom, Mbulelo Yedwa, said gangs have warned Eskom that they will need to pay a protection fee of R20,000 a month or else they need to leave the area. Read more here.

Tembisa residents say they are struggling to make ends meet after some found out they had been struck off the Ekurhuleni municipality’s indigent programme.

This week protests broke out in the suburb that led to violence and infrastructure damage while four people were also killed. Electricity issues also led to an escalation of the protests.

Ekurhuleni mayor Tania Campbell has failed to meet with residents so far to explain why the indignant programme has been scrapped but Campbell says it has not been canned but rather strengthened. She is due to meet with the community on Friday. Read more here.

How transport problems cost Team SA a medal chance at Commonwealth Games – Sport24

Team SA appealed to the Commonwealth Games after a transport bus malfunction caused one of the team’s 4x100m medley swimmers to miss the heats on Wednesday morning meaning SA had to drop out of the race as they only had three swimmers present.

Team SA said the unnamed swimmer missed the race through no fault of his own and that several other teams also missed the heats but only Team SA was appealing.

Not taking part in the race has potentially cost Team SA a medal as powerhouse Canada was disqualified from the competition in the heats. Read more here.

Two girls hacked to death in KwaZulu-Natal, MEC calls the incident ‘totally abhorrent and sickening’ – News24

It’s the start of Women’s Month, but that didn’t stop a man from entering a KZN home and brutally hacking two grade 12 girls to death.

The man is alleged to have entered the rented student accommodation in Ngwangwane village, in the Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma local municipality in southern KwaZulu-Natal and attacked the two girls with an axe.

One body was found inside the house while the other was found dumped five kilometres away. Police say the man was captured, escaped from custody and then recaptured. Read more here.

Female engineering student murdered at KZN university residence – Sowetan LIVE

In a separate incident, a male student allegedly killed a fellow 23-year-old female student at the Mangosuthu University of Technology at the Ark Royal residence in Durban over the weekend.

MUT spokesperson Bheki Hlophe said it was difficult to communicate after the “heartless and brutal killing of Xolile Mbatha” at the beginning of Women’s Month.

The male student is believed to have fled the scene and is still on the run from the police. Read more here.

Lara van Niekerk leads Tatjana Schoenmaker to gold-silver triumph – Times LIVE

Lara van Niekerk became South Africa’s new swimming sensation after she beat reigning Commonwealth 100m breaststroke champion Tatjana Schoenmaker.

Van Niekerk came home in a personal best time of 1min 05.47sec to claim gold while Schoenmaker clinched a historic gold-silver for team SA with a time of 1:06.68.

Chad le Close missed two opportunities to become the outright most decorated athlete at the Olympic games as he finished fourth in both the mixed 4x100m medley and 100m butterfly. Read more here.

Four killed in Tembisa protests – TimesLIVE

The death toll has risen to four people after protests broke out in Tembisa on Monday.

Residents are protesting electricity cuts due to defaulting customers while there is also dismay at the rising municipal rates. Protestors damaged a substation, which has sparked outrage among other Tembisa residents who fear power cuts could be on the cards.

Ekurhuleni metro police confirmed that two people had died earlier in the day while a further two were killed allegedly via an attempted ATM bombing. Read more here.

Joburg mayor Mpho Phalatse reported to Saps over ‘spy’ equipment – The Citizen

Joburg’s executive head in the office of the city manager, Mesuli Mlandu has accused mayor Mpho Phalatse and former group forensics and investigation services (GFIS) commissioner Shadrack Sibiya of having ‘spy’ equipment.

The State Security Agency (SSA) was asked to investigate the alleged procurement of intelligence gathering equipment by GFIS back in April but found no evidence of wrongdoing.

Unsatisfied with the result, Mlandu has turned to the South African Police Service (SAPS), claiming there is evidence from the SSA itself that implicates Phalatse and Sibiya. Read more here.

Powell’s era of brilliance is almost over, but the Blitzboks are far from finished – Daily Maverick

With the South African rugby sevens team’s triumph over Fiji in the Commonwealth Games gold medal match on Sunday, coach Neil Powell will be looking to complete a historic treble this year before leaving the head coach role.

Having won the gold medal in a 31-7 win over Fiji, the Blitzboks will turn their attention to the final leg of the World Sevens series in Los Angeles. The Blitzboks currently lead the standings with 124 points, just two points ahead of Australia who they beat 24-12 in the semi-finals at the Commonwealth Games.

If the Blitzboks do win the Sevens Series title then only the Sevens World Cup will be left for them to claim, which is due to be hosted in Cape Town later in September. Read more here.

Police minister Bheki Cele has asked the public to give the survivors of a horrific rape ordeal, which took place in Krugersdorp last week Thursday, some space after a social media account allegedly posted the survivors’ names and home addresses online.

Cele said psychologists and social workers have been working with the survivors as “they are traumatised.”

The minister was speaking on Sunday afternoon after a visit with the parents who asked the police questions and came up with suggestions over what should be done going forward. Read more here.

Top eight? ANC Women’s League wants more deputies in party leadership – and half of them to be women – News24

The ANC Women’s League made a bold proposal that the party should increase its leadership grouping known as the top six, to a top eight by adding a further deputy president and deputy secretary general.

The Women’s League would like the party to have two deputy presidents and two deputy secretary generals along with the president, chairperson, secretary general and treasurer.

Furthermore, ANCWL national coordinator Maropene Ramokgopa said the party should have a 50/50 gender quota for the top leadership. Read more here.

Swimmer Chad le Clos became the joint most decorated athlete at the Commonwealth Games on Sunday evening as he claimed a silver medal in the 200m butterfly in a time of 1:55.89 with New Zealand’s Lewis Clareburt winning.

Le Clos now has 18 medals at the games, which leaves him level with two shooters, Australian Phillip Adams and Mick Gault of England.

South Africa’s most decorated swimmer will have a chance to add to his medal haul with the 100m butterfly on Monday as well as the 4x100m medley and 4x200m freestyle relays. Read more here.
