Top News: No more gaming while driving for Tesla owners

Electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla says it will no longer allow drivers and passengers to play video games while the car is in motion. Elon Musk’s company told the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that it would disable the feature through a software update it will release to all vehicles. The Vehicle Safety Act prohibits the sale of cars in the US that could pose unreasonable risks to safety including those that distract drivers from driving safely. We can only imagine what chaos it would have caused on South African roads if Tesla had ever launched in Mzansi.

An ominous sandstorm engulfed farms in the Northern Cape bringing with it strong winds and (you guessed it) lots of sand and dirt. The storm was captured on video by local farmer Sunè Kotzé who said they were quite used to strong winds but that the giant dust cloud was very different from anything they had experienced before. Watch the link to the video in the headlines below, it truly looks like a scene out of an apocalyptic movie.

In sports, Orlando Pirates came from a goal down to defeat Benni McCarthy’s Amazulu 2-1 last night in the teams’ final game of the year. Ghanaian striker Kwame Peprah continued his brilliant form scoring both goals for Pirates just as he did in their previous game against Marumo Gallants. The win sees the sea robbers end the year in second position on the PSL table on 30 points, 14 points behind pacesetters Mamelodi Sundowns who sit on 44 points.

Top News: Fatal festive season roads and where are all the chips?

Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula says taxis and trucks contribute the most to fatal accidents on our roads over the festive period. Mbalula was speaking roadside on the Mabopane Highway in Soshanguve where he released the preliminary festive season statistics. Mbalula raised concern over the high number of accidents on SA’s roads, in which as many as five fatalities can come from a single crash. If you’re travelling today and tomorrow to be near friends and family for Christmas, please be careful, buckle up and abide by all the rules of the road.

Where are all the Lays and Simba chips? If the grocery store shelves are looking a little light on chips lately, it’s because there is a potato shortage in SA leaving chip manufacturers with low stock. Icy weather conditions during the winter months affected farmers ability to yield a good amount of potatoes with many spuds having to be destroyed because of damage while some retailers have started to put up signs apologising for the lack of chips in-store.

On the sports front, Kaizer Chiefs has had a rollercoaster 2021, from sacking coach Gavin Hunt, reaching the CAF Champions League final only to lose to Pitso Mosimane’s Al Ahly 3-0, an outbreak of Covid-19 that ran through the club, and then the PSL denied Chief’s request to postpone matches this month because of the outbreak of coronavirus. But Chief’s did manage to end the year off in style as Khama Billiat and Nkosingiphile Ngcobo’s goals gave the club all three points against Maritzburg United for a 2-0 victory on Wednesday evening.

Cape Town mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis says a full investigation will be conducted to determine what was the cause of a major power outage in the city. On Monday evening, the CBD, Sea Point, Woodstock, and surrounding areas were plunged into darkness and by Tuesday morning were still without electricity. On social media, cafes, restaurants, and shopping centres indicated if they had a generator and were open. Capetonians dished out tips as to who was open so that residents knew where to get a cup of coffee and who had power so that laptops and cell phones could be charged for work and communication. By midday, power had been restored to most areas, but some were still left with no electricity marking 24 hours without power by the time all areas had power restored.

In sports, Kaizer Chiefs will appeal the decision by the PSL not to grant the club a postponement of four matches in December following an outbreak of Covid-19 at the club. The club said in a statement it was “disappointed and taken aback by the contrasting lack of urgency from the PSL after having taken almost three weeks to address the matter.”

Top News: 2022 Must be the year we end the pandemic – WHO

Cape Town – WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said next year it would be possible to end the Covid-19 pandemic using “all available tools” like mask-wearing, vaccines and physical distancing. Social media was abuzz yesterday when large parts of the Mother City was plunged into darkness after the power suddenly cut out leaving many without electricity. Questions over the abrupt “load shedding without a warning” started to flood Twitter but soon the City of Cape Town revealed that a fault involving one high voltage line had left the Atlantic Seaboard, Woodstock and the surrounding areas without any power. This morning Eskom’s main feeder that supplies electricity to the City of Cape Town was down and some areas were still left with no power, making it a full 12 hours without any electricity.

Orlando Pirates defeated Marumo Gallants 2-1 on Monday night after coming from a goal down to claim victory. Pirates went behind early on in the 12th minute but soon started to find their feet and played some good football to hit back in the 24th minute with the equaliser coming from the boot of striker Kwame Peprah. The Ghanian star man soon doubled his team’s tally and Pirates nearly scored again late on in the match. The win sees Pirates climb to second on the PSL table.
