Boksburg blast: We have given police, NPA until Friday to enrol the case, says Lesufi – News24

According to News24, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has instructed the police and National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) to swiftly investigate the driver whose exploding gas truck reportedly caused the deaths of 26 people inside and outside Tambo Memorial Hospital. Lesufi reacted to the news that the police and NPA have decided not to file criminal charges against the driver.

“It is with a heavy heart that the driver was released from police custody. I immediately sought an explanation from the police and the NPA. They gave a detailed description,” he said. “They believe that their evidence would be complicated to have the necessary documentation to convince the magistrate to take a decision [to prosecute]. They were only ready with charges of reckless driving and destroying state property.” Read more here

Mampintsha’s family ‘trying to cope’ ahead of memorial and funeral services – TimesLIVE

Mandla Maphumulo, better known as Mampintsha, will be honoured on Thursday at the eThekwini Community Church during a memorial service. The 40-year-funeral old’s will be held on Friday at the Durban International Convention Center. 

Following a stroke, he was taken to King Edward Hospital in Durban for treatment last weekend, TimesLIVE reports. According to Afrotainment, Mampintsha was then transported to the Durdoc Hospital in Durban Central. Read more here

Australia thrash Proteas to win 2nd Test and series – eNCA

South Africa lost the second Test in Melbourne by an innings and 182 runs to the top-ranked and rampaging Australia on Thursday, as well as the series, eNCA reports. It ended a disappointing opening two Tests for the Proteas, who lost six wickets in two days in the opener at Brisbane, with a potentially face-saving third match at Sydney remaining. Read more here

Boksburg Blast: Father disappointed witness took video of his son burning – EWN

A father was disheartened by the explosion in Boksburg after his son was severely burned. According to EWN, a bystander filmed the victim instead of offering assistance.

A gruesome video of the incident has subsequently gone viral on social media networks. The young man in the video, 19-year-old Janil Geduld, died in the hospital just a few hours after the clip was captured. Geraldo Geduld, his father, was surprised when he received the footage and was asked whether that was his son. Read more here

In an episode of the Angie Martinez IRL podcast, Kim Kardashian became emotional when discussing the public breakdown of her relationship with ex-husband Kanye West. Initially, it appeared like they were handling their separation amicably, but West’s behaviour has become increasingly erratic. According to Elle Magazine, as she removed her life from his, Kardashian has done her utmost to conceal knowledge about West’s anti-semitic outbursts, public insults, and other attempts to lash out. “In my home, my kids don’t know anything that goes on, on the outside world,” said Kardashian. Read more here

Man United make bright start to life without Ronaldo – News24

Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial emerged out of the shadow of Cristiano Ronaldo to score in Manchester United’s 3-0 victory over Nottingham Forest on Tuesday, according to News24. Ramaphosa exits the national elective conference in much better shape than what he entered it after winning re-election and getting a majority of the Top 7 on his side as well. The latest boon for the president was the election of 57 out of 80 NEC members that are believed to be on his slate. Ramaphosa no longer has any excuses for inaction and must begin the work of cleaning up his government and pushing through the reforms he has been touting since day one on the job. Read more here.

Cabinet reshuffle imminent after more than a dozen ministers, deputies fail to make NEC cut – Times LIVE

After some senior cabinet members failed to make the new NEC, it looks certain that Ramaphosa will reshuffle his cabinet and axe those that did not make the cut. Among the big names on the chopping block include tourism minister Lindiwe Sisulu, who fought a bitter campaign against Ramaphosa, public enterprises minister Pravin Gordhan, who declined to be nominated to the NEC, and deputy president David Mabuza, who did not make it back onto the NEC. Zuma does not have valid certificate to prosecute Ramaphosa, says NPA – News24

After former president Jacob Zuma tried an eleventh-hour trick to prevent Ramaphosa from running for re-election at the ANC national conference, the national prosecuting authority said the nolle prosequi certificate used by Zuma to build his ‘private prosecution’ does not apply. The NPA said the certificate concerned state advocate Billy Downer and did not mention Ramaphosa. Downer is prosecuting Zuma in an arms-deal-related case. Zuma accused Ramaphosa of “being [an] accessory after the fact to crimes committed by, among others, advocate [Billy] Downer” in alleged breaches of the NPA Act. Read more here.

After running behind schedule since the first day after a messy and confusing registration process for delegates attending the conference delayed proceedings, Ramaphosa delivered his closing speech to a half-empty Nasrec hall on Tuesday and adjourned the conference until January 5. Eskom ramps up load shedding to stage 6 on Tuesday night – EWN

After some brief reprieve, load-shedding was increased to Stage 6 power cuts on Tuesday evening after further breakdowns at six of Eskom’s generating units during the day. Eskom said Stage 4 load-shedding would be implemented from Wednesday at 5 AM until further notice. The struggling power utility is arguably the number one crisis point for Ramaphosa and his government to deal with and he made mention of the “turmoil of load-shedding” in his closing speech at the conference. Musk says he’ll step down as Twitter CEO after finding a replacement – SABC News

Elon Musk seems keen to keep to his promise of stepping down as Twitter CEO after the billionaire launched a poll on Sunday asking his followers whether he should leave the top job. Musk lost that poll after around 58% of users said he should step down. Musk said on Tuesday that he would step down from the CEO position as soon as he could find a suitable candidate for the job and will instead focus on running the software and servers’ teams at Twitter. In California, a Los Angeles jury found former big time Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein guilty of rape and sexual assault after more than nine days of deliberation. Weinstein was convicted of three counts of rape and sexual assault against one woman, a European model and actor who testified anonymously as “Jane Doe 1”. Banyana Banyana players finally paid bonuses – Scrolla

Five players who were born in Limpopo have finally received their R100,000 bonuses from the provincial department of sport after they were promised the bonuses having been part of the team that won the Women’s African Cup of Nations. The players also received an extra R2,000 each from the Limpopo Businesswomen Association. The department said the delay in payment was an administrative oversight on its part and that the matter was bring investigated. Read more here.

Argentina’s captain Lionel Messi enjoyed a crowning moment in his glittering career as he and his teammates lifted the World Cup trophy in Qatar on Sunday. The South American team finally overcame France 4-2 in a penalty shoot-out having led the previous world champions twice during the match. In the first half, Argentina went 2-0 up and was cruising towards a third world cup title but French superstar Kylian Mbappe scored the first goal via a penalty and another goal seconds later to force extra time. Messi again put Argentina 3-2 up in extra time before Mbappe equalised via the penalty spot to complete a hat-trick. Read more here.

Who will lead the ANC? Top 7 results not announced, with conference to reconvene Monday – News24

The ANC was expected to announce the results of the national elective conference voting on Sunday. However, in the late hours, the Gauteng delegates were still voting, and the party confirmed it would reconvene the conference on Monday morning. Musk launches poll asking if he should step down from Twitter – Reuters

Twitter CEO Elon Musk is fond of setting up polls on his account to ask his followers for their thoughts on important business decisions at the social media company. Over the past year, he has asked his followers’ many questions, including whether he should buy the company in the first place. On Sunday evening, Musk asked whether he should step down from the company, presumably to hand over the running of the business to someone else. On Monday evening, National Assembly (NA) Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula said that she had denied appeals “to reconsider her decision to not allow the secret ballot to be used as a voting procedure”, according to News24. Votes on whether to accept the Section 89 panel’s report on President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Phala Phala dealings will not be secret. Parliament’s spokesperson Moloto Mothapo stated, “the Speaker, using her powers as enjoined by the NA rules, has a right to exercise her discretion in determining the voting method to be employed when deciding on questions before the House – where no voting method is prescribed in the rules of the National Assembly.” Read more here

Ramaphosa said his administration is “pushing back” against corruption, as evidenced by arrests. A disunited ANC can’t lead the country, he argued, and renewal is needed. “We are pushing back, we are fighting back, and I guess the state capture experience that we’ve been through should be demonstrated enough because, beyond the state capture process, many who have eyes can see that things are changing, the wheels of justice are moving.” Read more here

Almost R1 million spent to ‘shield’ Ministers from load shedding – The South African 

According to The South African, the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure spent about R800,000 to ensure that Ministers were not affected by load shedding. Minister of Public Works Patricia De Lille reportedly told the Democratic Alliance that (DA). De Lille’s department spent over R800,000 on diesel for ministers’ generators. The amount exceeds the money spent on replacing 13 outdated generators for ministers. Four more generators are being purchased, while the rest of the nation experiences stage 6 load shedding. Read more here
