Illegal mining | Krugersdorp residents living in fear – eNCA

Residents of Krugersdorp claim that the discovery of 21 deaths suspected to be illegal miners has traumatised and frightened them once more. Residents are losing hope that the murders will stop, they say. “We’re paranoid and fearful,” said one resident. While police have ruled out foul play for the murders, they say investigations are continuing, eNCA reports. Read more here

Nick Carter is still grieving his brother Aaron Carter’s passing. During the Backstreet Boys’ performance on November 6 at London’s O2 Arena, the singer was visibly moved as he and his colleagues paid respect to the deceased musician onstage, E! News reports.

Severe damage to Kusile chimney – News24 

Kusile’s severely damaged chimney is the latest setback for Eskom, News24 reports. On Wednesday, Eskom reported that on October 23, the flue gas duct at Unit 1 of the Mpumalanga power station “failed” in two places. 

“On 23 October 2022, a section of the Kusile Unit 1 flue gas duct (the equivalent of a chimney in a household) exiting the sulphur dioxide absorber failed on the horizontal rubber expansion joint as well as the compensator (a bend to direct flue gas up the chimney and to allow for thermal expansion of the chimney) whilst the unit was on forced shutdown for Flue Gas Desulphurisation recirculating pump repairs,” said spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha. Read more here

The coroner’s report reveals new information on the recent death of rapper Takeoff. The former Migos member was tragically murdered on November 1 in a bowling alley in Houston, Texas, during a dispute that allegedly arose from a dice game According to a report published by the New York Post, Takeoff was shot many times. Elon Musk stated that the Blue premium version of Twitter will cost $8 (R145) per month and will feature a verified blue tick for paying user accounts, MyBroadband reports. Cele deploys Amaberete to Finetown after gunmen killed 7 people – EWN

Police Minister Bheki Cele has assured the citizens of Finetown that he will increase police presence in the coming weeks. A group of gunmen targeted street vendors selling chicken feet over the weekend, resulting in seven fatalities and four injuries, EWN reports. 

Cele allowed people of the community to address him and Mawela about their safety concerns. According to EWN, they have requested the deployment of the Tactical Response Team, popularly known as “amaberete.” Read more here

Taylor Swift is the first artist in history to hold the top 10 positions on the US Billboard Hot 100 list with songs from her most recent album, Midnights. The new album was released on October 21 as both a conventional edition with 13 tracks and a deluxe release with seven bonus tracks. It has had one of the most successful album releases in the past seven years. According to Billboard, Swift is now tied with Barbra Streisand for the most No. 1 albums by a female artist.

Load shedding won’t disrupt matric exams, says Motshekga – EWN

Despite widespread fears, Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga has assured the public that load shedding will not affect this year’s exams. 

Matrics begin taking their final examinations on Monday, and on Sunday, the Minister gave a public address on the department’s level of readiness.

“Even if there’s load shedding, tomorrow we are writing English so we’ll use natural light. So it’s really working around it. We can deal with English with normal light so it’s going to be written during the day…whether there’s load shedding or there’s no load shedding, we’ll continue to write,” said Motshekga. Read more here

Former Eskom chief Matshela Koko out on R300,000 bail – Daily Maverick 

Matshela Koko, Thabo Mokwena, Hlupeka Sithole, Watson Seswai, and the former chief executive of the South African Local Government Association, Hlupeka Sithole, were also released on R300,000 bail, the Daily Maverick reports. 

The bail for Koko’s wife Mosima, his stepdaughters Koketso Aren and Thabo Choma, and attorney Johannes Coetzee was R70,000. They have been forced to surrender their passports and are prohibited from requesting new travel documents. Read more here

According to Billboard, “Lift Me Up” is featured on the soundtrack of the upcoming Marvel sequel Black Panther: Wakanda Forever marks Rihanna’s long-awaited return to music on Friday, October 28.

The Soweto derby between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs takes place this Saturday, and precautions, like as a bomb sweep of the venue and additional security, are being taken. This action was taken in response to a US terror alert.
