Another mine dam wall bursts in Jagersfontein – TimesLIVE

On Tuesday evening, another mining dam wall collapsed in Jagersfontein, TimesLIVE reports. 

Xolani Tseletsele, the mayor of the Kopanong municipality, said that the event occurred at 9 p.m. This was the community’s second dam collapse this month.

“What [the mine officials] have told me is that due to the rains we suffered in the last two days, the dam burst but it was only water. I am from site now and had a physical look at it. There is no more [water] flow to the community but what the incident has done is that it has brought back the panic to the community,” said Tseletsele. Read more here

Ramaphosa asks SA to ‘persevere’ amid load shedding crisis – EWN

President Cyril Ramaphosa has urged tolerance during load shedding times, stating that he is aware of the misery it has created.

Saturday’s Heritage Day festivities at the Union buildings in Tshwane were utilised by the president to address some of the country’s ongoing issues, EWN reports. 

“As South Africans, as we have done in the past, we have persevered, and I ask once again let us persevere, the challenge is being addressed, it’s a complex one,” said Ramaphosa. Read more here

KZN pastor arrested for alleged rape of 13 children – TimesLIVE

In the northern KwaZulu-Natal municipality of Nquthu, a pastor has been arrested on accusations of raping 13 children aged five to seventeen in the Luvisi community.

Nonhlanhla Khoza, the KZN MEC for social development, said on Thursday that the preacher reportedly enticed young girls and boys to view cartoons and then pornographic movies.

“The 56-year-old was allegedly caught when a boy told his mother of the alleged abuse, detailing other victims — 11 boys and two girls.” Read more here

Karyn Maughan, a specialist legal reporter for News24, has filed an urgent appeal with the Pietermaritzburg High Court. According to News24, Maughan has requested that a private prosecution initiated against her by former president Jacob Zuma be dismissed.

Coal conveyor belt that feeds Eskom power station catches fire – News24

Seriti Resources, the owner of the mine in Mpumalanga and one of the main suppliers of coal to Eskom, stated that an overland conveyor belt at its Kriel mine caught fire earlier on Monday after a veld fire on a neighbouring farm crossed the firebreak into the Seriti property, News24 reports. 

“Seriti is working with Eskom to ensure that there is no disruption to coal supply to the Kriel power station,” Eskom confirmed in a media statement. Read more here

Ramaphosa to cut short overseas visit to deal with power woes

After moving to stage 6 load shedding on Sunday morning, Andre de Ruyter, informed the media that stage 6 power interruptions were unavoidable.

According to EWN, Ramaphosa is now attending the burial of the United Kingdom’s Queen Elizabeth II. As soon as the burial is over, he will go back to South Africa and refuse his invitation to the UN General Assembly.
