Zuma’s security deposit raised by R500,000 as court battle with Downer, Maughan begins – Daily Maverick

The Daily Maverick reports that on Monday, the Pietermaritzburg High Court heard that former president Jacob Zuma’s R500,000 security deposit for his private criminal prosecution of advocate Billy Downer and senior News24 journalist Karyn Maughan for allegedly violating the National Prosecuting Authority Act had been increased.

In his request for more security, Downer said that the criminal trial, which was expected to last 10 days, could cost a little more than R500,000 for a senior lawyer and R450,000 for two junior lawyers. On top of that, there were fees for consulting of about R100,000 and a contingency fund of R5,000. Read more here

Damian Willemse and Herschel Jantjies will not play in the Stormers’ final URC international games. After starting at fullback and scrumhalf in the Stormers’ 37-20 victory over Zebre, the two will get a much-needed break before the Boks’ end-of-year trip next month. Read more here

Kim Kardashian recently took her six-year-old son Saint to a Los Angeles Rams football game, but the crowd at SoFi Stadium was not hospitable.

A video circulating on Twitter seems to show the fans booing the reality star as she is shown on the stadium’s Jumbotron. However, Kardashian maintained a positive attitude as she blew a kiss to the camera, Billboard reports. Read more here

Joburg playing catch up with water infrastructure as population grew by 2.5m in 5 years – mayor – News24

Over the past five years, Johannesburg’s population has grown from 4 million to 6.5 million, but the city’s infrastructure hasn’t kept up, News24 reports. Mayor Sello Dada Morero says that this is also part of the problem with water in the western and southern parts of the metro.

The article further states that Morero confirmed that the next step to deal with the water supply problems was to build more infrastructure and reservoirs to hold more water.

He also wants a “water revolution,” promoting the use of JoJo tanks to save water for drinking and cooking and relying on rainwater for washing clothes, watering gardens, and washing cars. Read more here

After the turmoil with his “White Lives Matter” shirt at Paris Fashion Week, Kanye West isn’t done with his rants on Instagram. According to Billboard, this time, Ye is making fun of Justin Bieber and John Legend while giving Drake some surprising compliments.

Ye’s latest posts started Wednesday night (Oct. 5), when he saw that Hailey Bieber had joined Gigi Hadid in supporting Gabriella Karefa-Johnson. Ye seemed to be offended by Hailey and Gigi’s comments, so he posted a screenshot of a news story about them and wrote, “Wait, am I cancelled again? Please tell me, Justin.” Read more here

Sanju Samson’s brave half-century came just too late, and the Proteas beat India by nine runs in the first ODI on Thursday at the Ekana International Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.

Three arrested for killing German tourist as family statement describes horror incident – News24

In an address to the media on Wednesday evening, Tourism Minister Lindiwe Sisulu said that South Africa is dangerous, but tourist attractions take particular care to assure the safety of tourists.

She had already visited with the deceased man’s family, who was murdered in Kruger National Park on Monday. “The family is traumatized,” said Sisulu. 

To avoid similar occurrences, the government educates travellers on the safest and least safe sites to visit. In the last 27 years, just three tourists have died in South Africa. “This is a safety record. For tourists, we provide maximum security”, said Sisulu.

Meanwhile, the police minister, Bheki Cele has confirmed that three persons have been identified in connection with the murder of the German tourist in Numbi, Mpumalanga. Read more here

According to News24, the new chairperson of Eskom, Mpho Makwana, said that the board doesn’t plan to make any immediate changes to management while it looks at the power plants.

Petrol price will be cut on Wednesday, but diesel gets pricier – News24

Amid interest rate hikes and a soaring cost of living, there will be some relief to our wallets on Wednesday when the petrol price is set to be reduced again but if you’re a diesel user then you’ll have to fork out even more for a litre of fuel. Unleaded 95 petrol will decrease by R1.02 a litre while unleaded 93 will be 89 cents cheaper. The lower price of fuel will see unleaded 95 petrol at R23.36 a litre in Gauteng, down from a record high of R26.74 in July and still higher than the R19.61 a litre price at the start of the year. Diesel will increase by between 10 and 15 cents a litre due to global supply constrain on the fuel. Read more here.

Kim Kardashian to Pay $1.3 Million to SEC for Crypto Touting – Bloomberg

Reality TV star Kim Kardashian has reached a settlement with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission after allegations she broke “US rules by touting a crypto token without disclosing she was paid for the promotion,” reports Bloomberg. Kardashian was reportedly paid $250,000 to promote the EMAX tokens, a crypto asset offered by EthereumMax, on her social media and despite her use of the hashtag ‘ad’ on her post, the SEC says investors weren’t made aware that it was a paid post. Kardashian agreed to settle the matter for $1.3 million so that she can move on with her other business interests according to her lawyers. Read more here.

James Maddison was sublime on Monday night in Leicester City’s 4-0 win over rivals Nottingham Forrest, which saw the Foxes move off the bottom of the table and record their first win of the Premier League season. Maddison was instrumental in the performance scoring two goals and assisting a further one in a sizzling display. Nottingham coach Steve Cooper admitted his side was struggling to get to grips with the “harshest of surroundings” having been promoted back into the league this season. André de Ruyter’s car bugged with ‘highly sophisticated device’ – TimesLIVE (for subscribers)

Last week, a “sophisticated bug” was detected in the vehicle of André de Ruyter, CEO of Eskom.

An initial assessment by a forensics business revealed that the gadget is “typically used by law enforcement and intelligence agencies” and investigators say it is “not commercially available on the open market”, TimesLIVE reports. 

“I was in the back of my Volvo when I saw something strange on the floor underneath the driver’s seat,” he said. “The device — a motherboard filled with microchips — immediately looked out of place. I assume it was stuck to the bottom of the seat and must have shaken loose.” Read more here

SA back to Stage 4 overnight as rough seas prevent diesel delivery – News24

On Wednesday evening, Eskom announced that Stage 4 loadshedding would continue throughout the night and until fuel supplies were restored.

Due to heavy waves, the vessel that is intended to offload fuel at Mossel Bay cannot dock.

In a separate article published on MyBroadband, André de Ruyter, the chief executive officer of Eskom, said that unless South Africa invests aggressively in renewable energy and lowers air quality requirements, Eskom may be forced to impose stage 15 load-shedding. Read more here

Coolio: Gangsta’s Paradise rapper dead at 59 – BBC

Coolio, well known for his single Gangsta’s Paradise, passed away at the age of 59 on Wednesday. Jarez Posey told TMZ, which was the first to publish the news, that paramedics suspected he may have had a heart attack.

“His longtime manager Jarez Posey told US media the artist was found unresponsive on the bathroom floor of a friend’s house in Los Angeles.” Read more here
