Load shedding – up to Stage 4 – expected in summer, Eskom says – News24

Parliament heard on Wednesday that Eskom still anticipates load shedding in the summer, with Stage 4 being the highest projected to be imposed, News24 reports. 

“Eskom plans to add new generation capacity over the next 36 months to reduce the risk of load shedding. This is enabled through its land lease agreement with Independent Power Producers, emergency procurement measures and imports from the region to be implemented over the next 12 months as part of energy crisis interventions.”

South Africans have suffered 91 days of load shedding so far this year. Read more here

Fábio Carvalho strikes at death to give Liverpool dramatic win over Newcastle – The Guardian

At the end of an exciting, tense game at Anfield, the referee said there would be five minutes of stoppage time. Carvalho, a young sub for Liverpool who just turned 20 on Tuesday, scored the game-winning goal in the 98th minute, The Guardian reports.

“Additional time was added to the additional time due to treatment to Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope and time-wasting from his teammates.” Read more here

According to The Yanos, Uncle Waffles will join BBC Radio 1’s residency as a host in September.

Two police officers, three others die in Rand Airport crash – News24

A South African Police Service (SAPS) fixed-wing aircraft crashed soon after takeoff from the Rand Airport in Germiston, Gauteng, on Tuesday afternoon, killing five people.

According to News24, the pilot is seeking medical treatment for life-threatening injuries.

“Authorities are on scene to establish the cause of the accident. The details of the deceased and injured pilot will be released once their next of kin have been informed.” Read more here

The Comrades Marathon has been devastated by another tragedy involving a runner who died on Sunday, News24 reports. 

The 47-year-old runner with the Adventist Athletic Club in Pretoria, Phakamile Ntshiza, died unexpectedly on route to Durban.

Justice minister Ronald Lamola has hit out at EFF leader Julius Malema’s backing of ANC treasurer-general, Paul Mashatile, to become the next president of the party.

Lamola was responding to Malema, who last week said the red beret-wearing party would be open to entering coalitions with the ANC after the 2024 elections if Mashatile is elected president.

Lamola said when it suited the EFF, they berate Mashatile as a “schemer” and “useless” yet “today Paul Mashatile is the best, and he must lead the ANC.” The justice minister quipped back at Malema and said his deputy, Floyd Shivambu should take over as party leader. Read more here.

So you think you know your boerewors? – Scrolla

Boerewors has to meet a very specific set of standards for it to be labelled and sold as such in South Africa after the government introduced new regulations to the Agricultural Product Standards (APS) Act.

The regulations govern the classification, packing, and marking of certain raw processed meat products. Boerewors must have a minimum total meat content of 90% and a fat content of no more than 30%.

Cereal or starch, vinegar, spices, herbs or salt, food additives, and water are the only other ingredients allowed. Read more here.

At last night’s MTV Video Music Awards, Taylor Swift won the coveted Video of the Year award and during her acceptance speech, the singer announced she would be releasing a new album on October 21.

According to EWN, Judge Edwin Molahlehi of the Johannesburg High Court said on Thursday that designating the fight song Dubul’ Ibhunu (shoot the boer) as hate speech would restrict freedom of expression.

“Molahlehi has dismissed AfriForum’s hate speech case against the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) over its use of the song, as well as of Biza Ama Fire Brigade (‘call the fire brigade’), by the party’s Mbuyiseni Ndlozi at the Brendin Horner murder case in 2020.” Read more here

‘No pay, no leave’ – govt warns civil servants who want to take part in Wednesday’s stayaway – News24 

According to News24, the Department of Public Service and Administration (DPSA) said in a statement that personnel who provide critical services are not permitted to engage in any protests during work hours on Wednesday. 

“Leave will be strictly managed, and no leave will be granted unless under extreme and compelling situations,” News24 adds.

The protest will take place in all major cities but Santaco, the South African National Taxi Council, will not participate in the strike, which may reduce its effect. Read more here

Ramaphosa bumps Banyana’s reward from government up to R15m – TimesLIVE

Banyana Banyana will get R15 million from the South African government and the department of sport for winning the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in 2022. (Wafcon), TimesLIVE reports.

The fifth suspect detained in connection with the murder of Hillary Gardee has reportedly been released. The suspect, who is thought to be in his mid-30s, was linked to Hillary’s cellphone and laptop.

On Sunday, police in Mpumalanga detained him for questioning, and on Tuesday, he was charged with defeating the ends of justice.

Leaked FBI report paints grim picture of Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt spat – Times Live

The domestic spat between award-winning actors and former couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie has taken a turn for the worse, with claims emerging that Pitt insulted one of their children and Jolie accused of trying to hurt her former husband.

The latest turn came in the wake of a leaked FBI report, which gave details of the former couple’s heated altercation on a private jet back in 2016, that ultimately led to their separation.
