Businesses have to seek different options to accommodate employees who reject the covid-19 vaccine for medical, constitutional and religious reasons.

News Roundup: 500 000 Teachers and education sector workers to be vaccinated

Nearly 300 000 Johnson & Johnson Covid-19 vaccines are expected to arrive in South Africa today. These vaccines are reserved for employees in the educational sector including teachers, governing body members and other educational staff. The national Department of Health has confirmed that vaccine rollout for teachers and education sector workers will commence on Tuesday 22 June.

Amanda Nyoka, a self-taught make-up artist from the Eastern Cape launched her skincare range, Amish Healthy Skin. Despite facing many challenges in her 3-year entrepreneurial journey, Nyoka has sought a certificate in importing and exporting goods. Her goal is to expand the range and sell in the international market. “I am now doing market research on having my products exported, I want them to be sold internationally.”

News Roundup: 13 246 New covid-19 cases identified

According to the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), South Africa has recorded the highest confirmed Covid-19 cases and positivity rate since January 2021. On 16 June 2021, the number of Covid-19 cases reached a shocking 1 774 312 with 13 246 new cases identified. The positivity rate increased to 21.7%.

Zoë Seloane, a 24-year-old education student from the Eastern Cape is ready to make history as the first trans woman to enter Miss South Africa. After completing a psychological evaluation and receiving the letter from her doctor, Seloane aligned her gender at home affairs and is now allowed to enter the national pageant.

Opinions of the Day: A bright future for the youth?

In his weekly From the desk of the President column, President Cyril Ramaphosa opinioned yesterday, “Youth Day is a reminder of the immense power and agency that young people have to create a better future for themselves.” Moreover, Ramaphosa added that youth is the greatest weapon in the fight for economic recovery. While the government is optimistic about youth development, there remains a great concern for unemployment in South Africa. “All plans and nothing to show for it”, writes Jan Gerber for News24. Unemployment amongst the youth is at a staggering 63.3% for 15 to 24-year-olds and 41.3% for 25 to 34-year-olds. Read

And while youth unemployment remains high, the question is what are young jobless South Africans really up to? “I found that livelihoods included running car wash ventures, fixing people’s cars as informal mechanics, and renting back rooms or shacks. As we commemorate and prepare for Youth Day tomorrow, we remember the significance of African youth protesting in 1976 against the Bantu Education Department. The aim of the protest was to detest Afrikaans as the basis language of instruction in secondary schools. In 2021, we still have many challenges facing the youth, from high unemployment to the youth legacy.

Merely 11 days ago Zaheer Sarang and Nabeela Khan, a young couple committed to spending their lives together. Shortly after arriving home from their honeymoon, the couple was found dead in Johannesburg. The Daily Maverick reported that the parents found the couple in the shower after suspected electrocution. Residents in the area have reported the electrical and water faults on numerous occasions with no action taken. The City Power has opened an urgent investigation.
