Babalwa Mbuku’s Ntombam Sanitary Towels are helping the disadvantaged

BY Nkosazana Ngwadla

South Africa has come a long way from Apartheid, but the effects are still felt almost thirty years later, especially by the poor. Many young women and girls still don’t have access to sanitary towels when they go through their monthly menstrual cycle. For little girls in school, this issue not only affects their confidence and social life, but it directly affects their studies too – as many of them tend to skip school for as long as a week every month, because of the lack of proper sanitary towels.

Menstrual coach, author and motivational speaker from UMthatha in the Eastern Cape, Babalwa Mbuku couldn’t fold her arms when she noticed this. In 2017, Babalwa sold her car to start her business, Ntombam Sanitary Towels.

Ntombam Sanitary Towels is a 100% woman owned company, based in East London in the Eastern Cape. Ntombam has achieved levels of success over the years in operation. Their core mission is to restore the dignity of a vulnerable girl child and reduce the high rate of school absenteeism by providing quality and affordable sanitary towels which they believe are a basic need.

Passionate about the girl child’s education, health and confidence, Babalwa often has pad drives and visits some disadvantaged schools in the Eastern Cape province.

She was inspired by a young girl who once said she preferred to get free sanitary pads from government instead of a free education, she has received some support for her business, having partnered with Vodacom in a CSI project in the Eastern Cape and being part of an incubator programme by the Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities.

Babalwa was in the top 25 of the 100 Most Influential Young South Africans of 2019 for social enterprise and philanthropy.

Esinako Ndabeni’s reflections on the Kwaito generation

BY Nkosazana Ngwadla

Esinako Ndabeni wrote her debut book, “Born to Kwaito: Reflections on the Kwaito Generation,” with co-author Sihle Mthembu while still an undergraduate student at the University of Cape Town, South Africa.

The young author started a blog about kwaito and met Sihle via the internet and the pair collaborated on a podcast and from there decided to write the book. “Born to Kwaito” explores the birth of kwaito music and culture during South Africa’s Post-Apartheid era, focusing on how the political backdrop informed the music and vice versa. The book was announced as part of the longlist for the Sunday Times Literary Awards’ Alan Paton Non-Fiction Prize shortly after its release.

Kwaito can be described as an experimentation and evolution of house music with elements of disco and dancehall.

Esinako is interested in and hopes more people write about the ways in which popular culture influences people’s everyday lives and how it encourages and normalizes ideas and behaviors about race, class and gender.

She sees this as the simplest way to engage with complex issues. Esinako is working on a children’s book that she hopes will empower little Black girls to see themselves beyond the limitations that western media places on them.

7 Inspirational South African Women

BY Nkosazana Ngwadla

The 8th of March is officially International Women’s Day – a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women’s equality.

International Women’s Day has occurred for well over a century, with the first gathering in 1911 supported by over a million people. Today, International Women’s Day belongs to all groups collectively everywhere. It is not country, group or organization specific.

Living as a woman in South Africa is tough, with all the gender-based violence and discriminations against women, it’s easy to throw in the towel and become a victim of circumstance. However, the women of this country continually show a spirit of resilience and manage to do the most amazing, inspirational things.

Although there are countless, The Fuse – Stories from South Africa has taken the time to recognize and celebrate 7 inspirational women:

  1. Divya Vasant – Co-founder of AMAZI, a social impact brand by women for women.

2. Lulama Wolf – a visual artist who explores the human condition in extremely imaginative ways, creating hyper visualized characters.

3. Lisa Adams – founder of Citizen Code, a startup of Technologists from Africa, trying to make a difference via meaningful tech, and a car racer.

4. Yoza Mnyanda-Siboto – a film director, editor and musician.

5. Bulelwa Mpinda – Podcaster and CEO of Young and Spiritually Inspired, a digital youth empowerment movement.

Omuhle Gela is going all out for her next Mom’s Day Off event in Johannesburg

BY Nkosazana Ngwadla

Local actress and businesswoman, Omuhle Gela is hosting her famous Mom’s Day Off Luncheon at a secret location in Johannesburg on the first of April 2023, and she’s going bigger and better! Omuhle envisaged creating something where moms from all walks of life – young and old – could spend the day together without their little ones, and at the beginning of 2021 she founded Mom’s Day Off.

Speaking to us last year about motherhood and the luncheon, the mother-of-one said, “We gather as moms and just have good food, play fun games, interact as moms, and advise each other, uplift each other, and empower each other as women who have experienced a lot of body and mind changes that most likely birthed some insecurities.”

Because many moms often feel the pressure of constantly having to be the perfect mother, Omuhle, as a mom herself, is passionate about making sure the moms that attend her luncheon feel comfortable and pampered (as they should!).

And thanks to two of her sponsors, Easy Waves and Lifestyle Home, she will do exactly that. When these brands heard of the actress’ initiative, they couldn’t help but get involved. “I’m excited and very grateful that these brands share my vision and passion. All we want is for the mothers to have a day for themselves, be celebrated for all the work they do, and walk away feeling lighter, happier even more equipped to be the best moms to their little ones,” Omuhle tells The Fuse.
