Mexico worshipers flock to giant Virgin of Guadalupe statue


El Ahuehuete (Mexico) (AFP) – Devotees wearing flower crowns arrive at a monumental statue of the Virgin of Guadalupe, a pilgrimage site near the town of El Ahuehuete, 90 kilometres southwest of Mexico City. They must climb 1,400 steps to reach a viewpoint of the giant statue crafted by Mexican artist Victor Gutierrez. The sculpture is 33 metres tall, 11 metres wide and weighs 110 tons.

Over 300 Rohingya refugees stranded on Indonesian beach


Pidie Jaya (Indonesia) (AFP) – After being adrift at sea for weeks, more than 300 Rohingya refugees from Myanmar, mostly women and children, finally reach the coast of western Indonesia – only for most of them to remain stranded on the island’s shores. Since a 2017 crackdown by Myanmar’s military, much of the mostly Muslim Rohingya population has fled to Bangladesh, from which many set off to risk the perilous sea journey to Malaysia and Indonesia.

‘We can’t even find bread’: foreign passport holders stuck at Rafah crossing


Rafah (Palestinian Territories) (AFP) – Foreign passport holders wait at the Rafah border crossing on Gaza’s southern border with Egypt, hoping to find their names on the list of those permitted to leave the embattled territory. Some are staying at the crossing point, afraid of Israel’s expanded military campaign which, for over a week now, has been focusing on Gaza’s southern cities. “We have been stuck here for 18 days,” says Noura al-Sayed Hasan, an Egyptian passport holder, who is with her young daughter, “I can’t even find any bread.”
