1. Favourite scary movie?
The Nun.

2. Favourite social media influencer?
Dr Khanyile.

3. Favourite Marvel or DC villain?
The Joker.

4. Introduce yourself.
My name is Mpho Mashigo, I am 22 years old, born and bred in Soweto and I am currently a final year student studying towards my bachelor’s degree in education at the University of Johannesburg.

5. Tell us about your background and what your future goals are.
I’m passionate about working with children and education. I truly want learners to become the best versions of themselves at an early age and I think that’s why I decided to become a teacher. If we can give learners the opportunity to learn these skills at an earlier age, the greater the chances of future entrepreneurs.

6. Is there something that happened in your life that changed your trajectory?
The pandemic had a big impact on my life. So many people have lost close family members, myself included. It really made me learn to appreciate my family and friends more and to stop second-guessing everything I want to do because tomorrow isn’t really promised to anyone.

7. How do you feel about being selected as a finalist in the Miss Soweto pageant?
I am so excited to be chosen as a finalist and for the opportunity to represent my township in the best way possible.
I believe I am a confident, humble young lady who would like to make a difference in people’s lives while also trying to improve myself. I know what I want to do and believe I can achieve it with enough focus and determination.

5. Tell us a bit about your background and what your future goals are.
I believe my sense of empathy makes me unique. The way I am able to understand the experiences and feelings of others is one of my strongest attributes. This allows me to be present for others and help them to navigate through tough situations.

I was raised in a loving household by my grandparents as I was born to young parents, who have sacrificed a lot in order to give me the best opportunities in life.

In the near future, I plan to start two NGOs, the first one will focus on helping the youth to be prepared for life after high school. The next NGO I hope to start will focus on gender-based violence, providing a safe space for women and children.

6. How do you feel about being chosen as a finalist in the Miss Soweto pageant?
The past year has been extremely difficult for us all. A lot has been taken from me personally and mentally. Being chosen as a finalist has been the biggest blessing, I am so honoured and grateful to be here. I feel my passion and zest for life coming back. Being part of a platform that has produced so many phenomenal women is an honour for me and I am excited about where this journey will take me.

Bonang Matheba. She is such a hard worker. She said she’s not an influencer but prefers to be called influential. I get her!

I have been a model from the time I watched my first pageant, which was in 2010 when Bokang was crowned Miss SA 2010. I haven’t looked back since then, entering my first pageant – Little Miss Dobsonville in 2011 – which I won at the age of 12. I knew then I wanted to be Miss Universe one day.

6. How do you feel about being selected as a finalist in the Miss Soweto pageant?
I’m super excited for this journey and I feel blessed to be chosen this year. I’m looking forward to a thrilling journey of self-discovery and learning from the women I’ll be walking this journey with.

7. Why do you think you have what it takes to be the next Miss Soweto?
I have an open heart ready to serve with love and respect. My humility allows me to be relatable with my peers, leaders and everyone around me. I celebrate my strengths and acknowledge my weaknesses which allow me to walk confidently in who I am.

I think Miss Soweto should not only be a true representation of the everyday Sowetan girl facing all the challenges society throws at us but she should be graceful about all these and boldly defy all odds – that defines me and I’m excited to represent a place I call home and people who have shaped who I have chosen to be today.

Through my actions, through serving my community and uplifting it for the better using my voice, my mind, my life to fight and stand for those women of Soweto who have so much to say but lack the voice and platform that I have been presented within the Miss Soweto pageant.

I strive to leave a mark in my community. To be remembered as a queen who played her role and had a genuine heart to serve her people.
