Miss Soweto 2021

Meeting Miss Soweto 2021 Finalist – Ontshiametse Tlhopane

1. Favourite scary movie?
The only full scary movie I’ve gotten to watch is The Conjuring. I liked it because I found humour in it despite how scary it was.

2. Favourite social media influencer?
Nompumelelo Ledwaba aka mpoomyledwaba or Mrs Mom is my favourite influencer. I admire her wisdom and her work ethic and how she approaches topics on her YouTube channel and podcast. Mpoomy is also a Christian woman like myself but what makes her stand out is how she uses her faith to be positive to people instead of projecting on people who follow her. I also love how she serves as a positive influence and representative.

3. Favourite Marvel or DC villain?
The Sandman is my favourite. He shows that there is a story to everyone and carries depth. The development about him on trauma and his conflict between good and bad resonate with regular good people who turn bad as a result of unresolved problems and previous life events.

4. Introduce yourself.
My name is Ontshiametse Tlhopane, I’m 20 years old and I am a final year student completing my degree in criminology and sociology.

From giving energy that allows people to be comfortable around me to giving empathy, kindness and love in the presence of all that is happening around us; that is what I am about. I’m really friendly and sociable with hints of awkwardness sometimes. That just shows that I’m not perfect. I’m open to making mistakes and learning from them so I am open to correction and growing from it.

5. How do you feel about being selected as a Miss Soweto finalist?
More than anything I am grateful to God for granting me favour to get to this point in the Miss Soweto pageant. Being able to make the best out of this opportunity is a huge privilege that will mould me even more than I ever thought possible. I am excited to see what lies at the end of this journey, especially for my character.

6. What are you passionate about?
I absolutely love conversations that breed space for learning, growth and introspection. I am passionate about education not in the sense of qualifications but in having people learn and unlearn especially about problems within our society.

7. Why do you think you have what it takes to be the next Miss Soweto?
I have the heart for the Miss Soweto title. One of my biggest blessings is my big heart and it allows me to be kind and open to people, not to turn a blind eye to their hurts and wishes. It allows me to exercise empathy and love, which none of us can do without. At the core of who Sowetans are is Ubuntu and I think I am in a position to exercise that with the help of the title of Miss Soweto.

6. Why do you think you have what it takes to be the next Miss Soweto?
I feel very fortunate to be selected as one of the finalists, I feel like this will be a life-changing opportunity for me.

Meeting Miss Soweto 2021 Finalist – Lerato Guliwe

1. Favourite scary movie?
In all honesty and sincerity, I do not have a favourite scary movie.

2. Favourite social media influencer?
My favourite social media influencer is myself as well as Zendaya Maree Stoermer Coleman. Zendaya is an American actress and singer who is a recipient of many accolades, including a Primetime Emmy Award and a Satellite Award. Zendaya began her career as a child model and backup dancer. She now has 110 million followers on Instagram. I strongly relate to her because she’s a person of colour and has a childhood passion for dance and modelling: Just like myself.

3. Favourite Marvel or DC villain?
Alice on Batwoman. Alice is the mysterious leader of the Wonderland Gang, a terrorist group kitted out with eerie rabbit masks!

4. Introduce yourself.
I am Lerato Zenande Guliwe. I believe the greatest people that walked the earth became great through serving others, which is why I choose to own these words and walk in them.

I am a 22-year-old Logistics post-graduate student from the University of Johannesburg. I am a founder of a newborn NGO called ENABLED which seeks to provide hearing and mobility aids to disabled children in underprivileged communities in Gauteng.

5. Tell us a bit about your background and what your goals for the future are.

My goal is to always remain in a good, healthy and positive mental state because anything we are responsible for will always reflect the current state of our minds, be it business, my social life and my Miss Soweto journey. I always want to develop my character and humility so that while I assume the character of Queen, I can also treat everyone around me with love, kindness, patience, compassion, joy and servitude. I want to win Miss Soweto and make my reigning year so unique in serving as many communities as I can in and around Soweto. It is my greatest desire to follow the inspiring advice my mother gave me, to study a career that will enable me to start my own business.

6. How do you feel about being selected as a finalist in the Miss Soweto 2021 pageant?
I thank God every day for being chosen as a finalist in the Miss Soweto pageant. This girl is excited to be here, her dream came true and her Prayers were answered. I am appreciative and honestly grateful to be given a chance to compete in this pageant.

7. Is there something that happened in your life that changed your trajectory?
I was raised in a house that had a lot of emotional and physical abuse and I suffered deep peer pressure and bullying. My healing process changed my path to be more impactful, positive and built my confidence.

8. Why do you think you have what it takes to be the next Miss Soweto?
I have what it takes to become Miss Soweto 2021 because I have worked on healing, unlearning things from my past that I do not wish to grow with, and building myself mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Now, I can teach the broken hearted to do the same. The world deserves happiness. I am here to transfer knowledge, share my rare stories and experiences and how they shaped me, I want to help others wipe their tears. I want to speak in public spaces and help children who are victimised while donating hearing and mobility aids to the ones who are physically impaired.

Meeting Miss Soweto 2021 Finalist – Karabo Lesenya

1. Favourite scary movie?

Truth is, I don’t watch scary movies, I don’t have the stomach for it! However, I do love watching true crime documentaries about pretty gruesome stories. Does that count? [laughing]

2. Favourite social media influencer?

Mpoomy Ledwaba has to be at the top of my favourite social media influencers list. She creates content around family, Christianity and well-being (fitness, eating right and mental health). Her work ethic is amazing and I love how she has created a name for herself and still keeps on creating it in the social media influencer space. I love her Christian content the most, there’s one video in particular that has helped me in my walk with Christ.

3. Favourite Marvel or DC villain?

I’d say Thanos because he had a very strong conviction regarding his beliefs and he even sacrificed his own daughter for what he believed in.

4. Introduce yourself

I’m Karabo Lesenya. I’m 22 years old and currently pursuing my honours degree at the University of Johannesburg.

I am a big fan of YouTube, and as a result I started my own YouTube channel. I even learned how to crochet just from watching YouTube videos, which I now do as a hobby.

5. How do you feel about being selected as a FINALIST for the Miss Soweto pageant?

I am so excited to be a finalist in the Miss Soweto pageant. The 12-year-old in me is screaming because from that age it has always been a dream of mine to enter and walk on the stage of a big pageant. It’s that moment when you feel like God has said: “My child, I have not forgotten you.”

6. What are you passionate about?

One of the things I’m passionate about is hair. Our natural hair is so beautiful and it can grow very long without harmful chemicals. I feel like there should be more education and knowledge surrounding the care for our natural hair.

One of my goals is actually to own a natural hair salon in the future.

7. Why do you think you have what it takes to be the next Miss Soweto?

I believe I have what it takes to become the next Miss Soweto – I have a teachable spirit, I like to learn and pass down what I have learned. I have good leadership skills and a desire to inspire others to follow their dreams.

3. Favourite Marvel or DC villain?
The Joker.

Meeting Miss Soweto 2021 Finalist – Lesego Masote

1. Favourite scary movie?
A Quiet Place is believed to be one of the top 5 scariest movies of all time. I’m a die-hard fan of horror/scary movies and I choose this specific movie because it’s very recent and it relates to my fears and challenges I face every day.

2. Favourite social media influencer?
Sbahle Mpisane. She is a fitness enthusiast and coach with over 2.1 million followers. As a fitness enthusiast and uprising influencer with 38k followers and growing, she is someone I look up to. In 2018, she was involved in an accident that resulted in memory loss and leg injury. Sbahle never let her trajectory deter her from pursuing her dreams; she continued to work toward her goals despite her tragic circumstances. She inspires me to persevere in the face of adversity.

3. Favourite Marvel or DC villain?
It must be Harley Quinn; she has something that no one else really has. She’s constantly undermined and more importantly undervalued. Because of this, she’s unpredictable in fights and perceived to be not as intelligent as her partner, the Joker. In all actuality, Harley is probably smarter and better at coming up with plans. No one expects her to be the biggest threat so when she comes in with a hammer and a few tricks up her sleeve she can cause a lot of trouble. She’s incredibly manipulative as she plays the perceptions to her advantage, acting dumb when she’s sometimes the smartest person in the room.
I – on the other hand – believe being undervalued is a blessing in disguise because I get the freedom to express myself when no one is watching and strike when they least expect it. At times I prefer not to be the loudest one in the room and I can be able to observe the room and analyse, which I believe always puts me in the forefront. Denzel Washington once said, “the loudest one in the room is the weakest of them all.”

4. Introduce yourself.
My name is Lesego Ericah Masote. I am 22 years old, currently completing my Honours in Human Resource Management at the University of Limpopo. I am a very proud fitness enthusiast, an occasional DJ and a model.

5. Tell us a bit about your background and what your goals for the future are.
Growing up, I was always a very artistic person, but I was limited in my ability to pursue my passion and love for art because I had to prioritise my parents’ values for education. In the process of becoming the woman I am today, I discovered that nurturing talent and acquiring knowledge are the most important aspects in shaping oneself into becoming the best version of themself. My goal is to live life without limitations.

6. How do you feel about being selected as a finalist in the Miss Soweto pageant?
Miss Soweto has created a legacy of impactful women, and I am super excited to be a part of the continuous legacy. I believe learning from these women would help me seize my destiny and step into my power.

7. Why do you think you have what it takes to be the next Miss Soweto?
Soweto is the heart of the nation, home to a wide range of role models, but I have always been a leader from a young age, regardless of the roles assigned to me coming from a township. The equal consideration I have for both education and talent has always been a standout that has pushed me to go beyond my limits.

I lead an extremely active lifestyle and portray confidence and energy every day of my life. Miss Soweto is a brand for the people, I believe my personality & personal goals & passions fit with this ethos.

Meeting Miss Soweto 2021 Finalist – Lebogang Chiloane

1. Favourite scary movie?
Suicide Squad counts, right? If so, I like how the bad guys worked together even if they were still bad. The Nun was too terrifying and I watched it with one eye closed!

2. Favourite social media influencer?
Candice Mama. She is an author and an amazing person, such a ball of energy and always dances.

3. Favourite Marvel or DC villain?
Loki. He is smart and polite, but also very sneaky. Harley Quinn is also brilliant! I guess I like smart and witty, with a bit of crazy.

4. Introduce yourself.
I am Lebogang Caroline Chiloane. I am a full-time high school teacher, currently pursuing my honours degree in Education and Professional Development at the University of Pretoria. I’m an extrovert who loves smiling and hugging but Covid-19 ruined the hugging part for me…
I would say my optimism is one of my key qualities. I see the best in any situation, no matter how bleak.

5. What are you most passionate about?
I am passionate about holistic education and mentorship. Being a teacher, I believe education should not be confined to the four classroom walls, it should cater to the whole person. My goals are to pursue a doctorate in education, especially assisting educators in improving their skills to deliver quality education. I also intend to continue with my high-school mentorship program for career success and expand it to other schools and provinces because I understand the need for young people to live lives of purpose and impact. We can bring about a positive impact in the world by supporting the people who will be taking part in bringing about livelihood change.

6. Is there something that happened in your life that changed your trajectory?
The passing of my father in 2011 drastically changed my life. I had just started high school and it was a new environment for me. I was devastated by the loss, but what transpired after that was my motivation to do well in life increased exponentially. I was more direct with my goals, I planned bigger and better.

7. Why do you think you have what it takes to be the next Miss Soweto?
I am thrilled about this opportunity! I am still in disbelief of the honour to share this space with such amazing young women. I am excited to be able to enact change and inspire hope in other young people through Miss Soweto as a collective.

I am resilient. I see the best in every situation, and I know how to implement the plans I have to get maximum output. I am able to inspire hope in others and I believe these are the qualities that will make me stand out and carry the crown with grace.

We are all unique in our own ways, much like flowers, which are all distinct and have different characteristics. My distinguishing feature is my patience. I run my own race, at my own speed, with just myself to compete with.

7. How do you feel about becoming a Miss Soweto finalist?
Having been selected as a Miss Soweto finalist makes me feel honoured as I am taking steps to make my dreams a reality, this platform is an amazing start.
I should be the next Miss Soweto because I want to take up space on this platform. The Miss Soweto brand has empowered so many Sowetan ladies to leave a very impactful legacy the youth will not only be inspired by but also benefit from. This kind of empowerment is what I want to confer onto all those I will have the opportunity to interact with.
