Miss Soweto 2021

Meeting Miss Soweto 2021 Finalist – Ludina Ngwenya

1. Favourite scary movie?
I Spit on Your Grave.

2. Favourite social media influencer?
Myself!

3. Favourite Marvel or DC villain?
The Joker.

4. Introduce yourself.
Mzansi, this is your child’s future favourite teacher. I am Ludina Ngwenya! A model in the making that is here to break stereotypes and barriers.

5. Tell us a bit about your background and what your goals for the future are.
Knowing what it feels like to live with a visible difference, I am passionate about challenging the stigma and prejudice faced by people living with scars, marks and conditions to build a more inclusive, safer and realistic society.

Being different makes you vulnerable to discriminatory attitudes that undermine and belittle you, with the perpetrators being of no specific group but all of us.

6. How do you feel about being selected as a finalist in the Miss Soweto Pageant?
Growing up, I never felt represented in the pageant industry, mainly because I never saw models with scars like mine. So I remember searching on the internet “Can you be a model with scars?”

To be selected as a finalist for Miss Soweto feels like I am answering the younger me, and that feels absolutely amazing!

7. Why do you think you have what it takes to be the next Miss Soweto?
I will be the representation that I never saw growing up in the hope to inspire people to never doubt, hide or shrink themselves. In my voice, many stories can be heard. I am relatable and through me, I hope you can own your story, look beyond your circumstances and achieve your wildest dreams.

Meeting Miss Soweto 2021 Finalist – Khanyisile Dakile

1. Favourite scary movie?

My favourite scary movie is The Grudge because I just remember watching it with my cousins for the first time. My grandmother’s house had a surround sound system, which made the cat’s meows seem like it was coming from under the couch, I’ll never forget how one of my cousins jumped and scared us all into thinking that what was happening was real and those were actually one of my most fondest memories being home alone with my family, we still talk about it till this day.

2. Favourite social media influencer?

Bridget Masinga because aside from being a well-accomplished media pioneer and model, I just love how she can still be laid back and her true self. I’ll never forget a live post she made where she was eating Chicken nuggets from McDonald’s and discussing topics of the day, looking absolutely gorgeous while literally just chilling at home. She’s very funny and never censors herself ever.

3. Favourite Marvel or DC villain?

My favourite supervillain has to be Killgrave from a famous Marvel Netflix series called Jessica Jones staring the impenetrable Luke Cage. I always say the bad guys always get the cool powers and Killgrave is definitely one of the best characters I’ve ever watched, he can literally compel people to do just about anything he wants them to and doesn’t even have sympathy for the consequences. Of course, he makes people do bad things they don’t want to do for most of season one and his only weakness is his obsession for Jessica, this basically tells me that even though he is a complete psycho narcissist, there is still a little bit of good left under all that crazy.

4. Introduction:

My name is Khanyisile Dakile.  I’m 24 years old from Diepkloof in Soweto.

I’m a final year student at Boston Media House, majoring in television and sound engineering. I am also a production coordinator for an online talk show called Incite with Tendai Marowa. I’m an entrepreneur of a beauty business and I’m currently in the process of registering my NPO called the Sihle Dakile Foundation, which focuses on suicide awareness and mental health management for the youth.

5. Your background and goals for the future?

Growing up in Diepkloof made me develop a thick skin because I had to learn to be tough at an early age, my community, like any other, was filled with distractions so it was hard for me to fight off peer pressure and negative energies but with the support of my family and loved ones, I became the graceful lady that I am today.

6. How do you feel about being selected as a finalist for Miss Soweto 2021?

I feel honoured to even be considered for the possibility to represent not just one of the biggest brands in South Africa but also a whole collection of communities in Soweto.

7. What are you passionate about?

I am passionate about celebrating the tenacity of young women and the roles they play in society today. I am passionate about constantly reinventing myself and inspiring others through positive representation and lastly, I am passionate about enriching the youth to become game changers in their communities by loving myself and spreading positive energy around me.

8. A unique thing about you?

The one unique thing about me is my Warrior Spirit and my ability to bounce back from anything no matter how hard or how painful it might be.

Being bullied from an early age definitely not only changed my trajectory but made me appreciate myself even more.

9. Why do you think you have what it takes to be Miss Soweto?

I believe in what Miss Soweto stands for as a brand – enriching women to become pillars of their communities and I would love to be a part of that. Miss Soweto is like a scholarship program and not just a beauty pageant. It serves as a powerful launching pad for me to open doors I never thought I could. If I become the next Miss Soweto, I know that the success will not only be mine but also for every little girl in the township who sits alone thinking that she can never achieve her dreams. I’m here to say: “You will and you already have!”

Meeting Miss Soweto 2021 Finalist – Dominique Cilliers

1. Favourite scary movie?

My favourite scary movie in celebration of Halloween is Scream (1996).

2. Favourite social media influencer?

Kylie Jenner. Due to her 252 million followers she has become a powerful influencer.

3. Where are you from?

My name is Dominique Cilliers. I am 19 years old, from the beautiful community Klipspruit West, Soweto.

4. Tell us a bit about your background and what your goals for the future are.

I was raised by two hardworking parents who always had my interests at heart.

I would like to pursue a career in law as an attorney and hope to one day own a Rehabilitation Centre. I am passionate about making a difference in local communities and helping the less fortunate.

5. How do you feel about being selected as a finalist for the Miss Soweto Pageant?

Being selected as a finalist for the Miss Soweto Pageant is an indescribable feeling – my tummy is constantly filled with butterflies! It is a huge achievement and something I’m proud to shout about.

I am a tenacious person. A person who never gives up and never stops trying. A person who does whatever is required to accomplish a goal, therefore I believe I have what it takes to be the next Miss Soweto because I will use this platform to shape young South African females into leaders, embrace their self-worth, own their voice and inspire others.

Top 20 young Soweto women reach for the stars as they vie for the #MissSoweto2021 title

SOWETO, JOHANNESBURG (12 October 2021) – It’s spring at last and the annual Miss Soweto pageant is back, bringing with it a welcome burst of hope as 20 young women inch closer to the crowning moment. A firm favourite on the Soweto social and entertainment calendar since 1979, the pageant returns with great aplomb.

Twenty eager finalists will take to the stage of the Soweto Theatre on 27 November to compete for the coveted titles of #MissSoweto2021, First Princess, Second Princess, Miss Personality, Miss Photogenic and People’s Choice Award.

“The pageant has a dedicated following,” says Mokhele Makhothi, Marketing Manager of White Star Super Maize Meal, the headline sponsor of the event. “The countdown to the finals of Miss Soweto 2021 is gaining momentum.  It’s a fabulous spectacle that kicks off the festive season and has launched many household names, including those of businesswoman Basetsana Khumalo, who was Miss Soweto in 1990; Augustine Masilela, Miss Soweto 1987; the CEO and Founder of The Image Firm, Doris Msibi, who wore the crown in 2000; and deejay and media personality, Lerato Kganyago, who took the coveted title in 2005.”

These and other award winners are, he says, a worthy illustration of courageously bold women who are confident self-starters keen to use the opportunity Miss Soweto presents to create a public profile, build a successful career, and make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. The pageant is all about giving Sowetan women a platform to be bold, to take charge of their own lives, and to be a force for good in the community in which they live.

The  worthy 20 finalists will go through a series of workshops to enhance their business acumen, social media etiquette, social responsibility, diversity & inclusion, fashion & beauty and will receive training  in the finer points of etiquette and professionalism. It’s a treat of a lifetime for the participants and, for many, a life-changing experience.

The reigning Miss Soweto, Thobile Steyn, says the pageant was an important turning point in her life and has set her on the path to becoming everything she can be.

“Winning the Miss Soweto title has changed the course of my life,” she says. “The platform has allowed me to interact with incredible people from all walks of life. It allowed me the opportunity to indulge my passion for public speaking; presenting an award at the 2021 South African Music Awards was one of those unforgettable moments.  I encourage this year’s finalists to rise courageously and their  define our own space in the world.”

As always, community involvement is an intrinsic part of the event and White Star will invite fans around the country to help choose the People’s Choice Award. Voting will open on 26 October – 26 November, giving everyone a chance to make their selection. To vote for your favourite contestant, simply say ‘hi’ on WhatsApp using the number 087 153 1007 or click through to the White Star online voting platform at https://bit.ly/WhiteStarWA – and include the unique number allocated to your pick. Fans can vote up to five times per unique cellphone number.
